Infinitiv (Infinitive)

The infinitiv (infinitive) in Swedish is the base form of the verb.
It is often used after the marker att (to) or in various verb constructions with auxiliary verbs.

Form type:

Non-finite — expresses the action in its base form, without tense, person, or mood marking.

Active Voice:

Form Example Verb: tala (to speak)
Infinitive tala

The infinitive form is typically preceded by att (to):

  • att tala (to speak)

Passive Voice:

Form Passive Infinitive
/ talas

Usage:

  • After auxiliary verbs:
    Jag vill tala. (I want to speak.)
  • To express general actions or states:
    Att tala svenska är roligt. (Speaking Swedish is fun.)
  • In future or modal constructions:
    Jag ska tala med henne. (I will speak with her.)

Examples:

  • Infinitive Affirmative:
    Jag vill tala svenska. (I want to speak Swedish.)
  • Infinitive Negative:
    Jag vill inte tala svenska. (I do not want to speak Swedish.)
  • Passive Infinitive:
    Svenska kommer att talas på mötet. (Swedish will be spoken at the meeting.)

Notes:

  • Some verbs in Swedish can omit att before the infinitive, especially modal verbs (kan tala, vill tala, måste tala).
  • The supinum is a different non-finite form used with har to make perfect tenses (har talat).
