Imperativo (Imperative)
The imperative is used to give direct commands, instructions, invitations, or advice.
In Portuguese, the imperative exists in affirmative and negative forms, and its conjugations differ from the indicative and subjunctive in some persons.
Mood
Part of the imperative mood, it focuses on influencing the actions of others rather than stating facts.
1. Affirmative Imperative (Imperativo Afirmativo)
In EP, the affirmative imperative is formed:
- For tu, vós: from the present indicative, dropping the final -s in the tu form.
- For você, vocês: from the present subjunctive.
- For nós: from the present subjunctive.
- The eu form does not exist.

2. Negative Imperative (Imperativo Negativo)
The negative imperative uses the present subjunctive for all persons (except eu, which does not exist).

Fala agora. (Speak now.) - Instructions:
Vire à esquerda. (Turn left.) - Invitations:

Não comas demasiado açúcar. (Don’t eat too much sugar.)
Irregular Imperative Forms
Some verbs have irregular stems or forms:

Brazilian Portuguese Differences
- In BP, the tu form is often replaced by the você form in speech, even when addressing one person.
- BP informal: Fale agora instead of EP Fala agora.
- The vós form is virtually unused in BP.
- BP uses the same subjunctive-based forms for both affirmative and negative in você/vocês contexts.
- In BP, the present indicative of você often replaces the EP tu form:
- EP: Fala → BP: Fale (even in informal settings).

- Requests: Por favor, espere.
- Instructions: Clique aqui.
- Warnings: Não toquem no vidro.
- Invitations: Venham connosco.
