Futuro do Presente do Indicativo (Simple Future Indicative Tense)

The futuro do presente do indicativo is used to express actions or events that will happen in the future. It can also be used for predictions or, more rarely, as a formal command.

Mood

The indicative mood expresses actions that are factual and certain.
The future tense in the indicative mood expresses events that are expected to happen or are planned.

  • Indicative mood = certainty, facts, reality
  • Future tense = actions that will occur

trazer (to bring) trarei traremos

Brazilian Portuguese Differences

  • Periphrastic Future:
BP often replaces the simple future with ir (present) + infinitive in everyday speech:
    • BP: Eu vou falar (I will speak)
    • EP: Eu falarei (I will speak)
  • Formality:
In BP, the simple future (falarei) is mostly reserved for formal writing, legal contexts, or literature.
In EP, it’s common even in casual conversation.
  • Pronouns:
    • BP tends to use você instead of tu, conjugated like ele/ela:
      • BP: Você falará
      • EP: Tu falarás

Common Time Expressions

  • Amanhã (tomorrow)
  • Logo (soon)
  • No próximo ano (next year)
