Kondisjonalis (Conditional Present)

The Kondisjonalis in Norwegian Bokmål is used to talk about hypothetical or imagined situations in the present or future, often describing what would happen under certain conditions. It is also used for polite requests and in reported speech.

Mood:

The Kondisjonalis uses a conditional mood, which expresses potential or hypothetical situations rather than facts.

  • Mood: Conditional (expresses what would happen under certain circumstances)

Usage:

  • To express hypothetical situations:
Jeg ville reise mer hvis jeg hadde tid. (I would travel more if I had time.)
  • To make polite offers or requests:
Ville du hjelpe meg? (Would you help me?)
  • To express future-in-the-past:
Han sa at han ville komme. (He said that he would come.)

Formation:

The Kondisjonalis is formed with the preterite (past tense) of the modal verb vil (would/will) or skulle (should/would), followed by the infinitive of the main verb.

  1. Using ville – for general hypothetical actions:
Jeg ville spise (I would eat)

Vi skulle dra (We would go)
