Conditionnel Passé (Past Conditional)

The conditionnel passé is used to express actions that would have occurred in the past under certain conditions. It conveys hypothetical situations related to past events.

Moods:

  • Conditional Mood: The conditionnel passé itself is part of the conditional mood, which expresses hypotheticals or possibilities.
  • Indicative Mood: The auxiliary verbs avoir and être are conjugated in the indicative mood to express facts about the state of the subject in the past tense.

Usage:

  • To express hypothetical actions that did not happen: Si j'avais su, je serais venu. (If I had known, I would have come.)
  • To indicate regret or missed opportunities: J'aurais aimé partir plus tôt. (I would have liked to leave earlier.)
  • To make polite requests regarding past actions: Vous auriez pu m'aider. (You could have helped me.)

Formation:

The conditionnel passé is formed using the auxiliary verbs avoir or être in the conditionnel présent, followed by the past participle of the main verb.
