Futur Simple (Future Simple)

The futur simple is a tense used to describe actions that will happen in the future. It expresses intentions, predictions, and scheduled events.

Mood:

The indicative mood is used to express facts and future actions. The futur simple allows speakers to convey certainty about future events.

  • Indicative mood = certainty, facts, reality

Usage:

  • To describe future actions: Demain, j'irai au marché. (Tomorrow, I will go to the market.)
  • To express intentions: Je commencerai mes études la semaine prochaine. (I will start my studies next week.)
  • To make predictions: Il fera beau demain. (It will be nice tomorrow.)
  • To express promises or commitments: Je t'appellerai ce soir. (I will call you tonight.)

Formation:

The futur simple is formed by taking the infinitive form of the verb (or the stem for irregular verbs) and adding the appropriate future endings.

Irregular Verbs:

Some verbs have irregular stems in the futur simple. Examples include:

  • Être (to be): je serai
  • Avoir (to have): j'aurai
  • Aller (to go): j'irai
  • Faire (to do/make): je ferai
  • Venir (to come): je viendrai

Common Time Expressions:

  • Demain (tomorrow)
  • La semaine prochaine (next week)
  • Dans un an (in a year)

Examples:

  • Je ferai mes devoirs plus tard. (I will do my homework later.)
  • Ils viendront à la fête. (They will come to the party.)
