Konditionaali Preesens (Conditional Present)

The Konditionaali Preesens in Finnish is used to express actions or situations that would happen under certain conditions. It can also be used for polite requests, softening statements, or expressing intentions.

The Konditionaali Preesens uses the conditional mood (konditionaali), which expresses hypothetical or dependent actions.

  • Mood: Conditional (expresses what would happen if a condition were met)

Usage:

  • To describe hypothetical situations:
    Menisin rannalle, jos olisi aurinkoista. (I would go to the beach if it were sunny.)
  • To express intentions depending on conditions:
    Tekisin sen, jos ehtisin. (I would do it if I had time.)
  • To make polite requests or soften statements:
    Voisitko auttaa minua? (Could you help me?)
  • To express what someone would do in reported speech:
    Hän sanoi, että auttaisi sinua. (He said he would help you.)

Formation:

The Konditionaali Preesens is formed by adding the -isi- marker to the strong grade of the verb stem, followed by personal endings.

Active Voice Example – tehdä (to do):

Passive Voice – tehdä (to do):

  • tehtäisiin (it would be done)

Common Irregulars:

  • olla (to be): olisin, olisit, olisi, olisimme, olisitte, olisivat
  • tulla (to come): tulisin, tulisit, tulisi, tulisimme, tulisitte, tulisivat

Common Condition Words:

  • jos (if)
  • mikäli (if/in case – more formal)
  • kunhan (as long as)

Examples:

  • Opiskelisin enemmän, jos minulla olisi aikaa. (I would study more if I had time.)
  • Voisitko kertoa minulle? (Could you tell me?)
  • He sanoivat, että he tulisivat juhliin. (They said they would come to the party.)
  • Kävisimme siellä, jos meillä olisi auto. (We would visit there if we had a car.)
