Konditionaali Perfekti (Conditional Perfect)

The Konditionaali Perfekti in Finnish is used to express actions that would have happened in the past if certain conditions had been met. It combines the conditional mood with the perfect aspect.

Mood:

The Konditionaali Perfekti uses the conditional mood (konditionaali), which expresses hypothetical or dependent actions, in the perfect aspect to refer to completed actions in the past.

  • Mood: Conditional (expresses hypothetical actions in the past)
  • Aspect: Perfect (action is completed before another time point)

Usage:

  • To describe an unreal situation in the past:
Olisin tullut, jos olisin tiennyt. (I would have come if I had known.)
  • To express past intentions that didn’t happen:
Olimme luvanneet, että olisimme auttaneet. (We had promised that we would have helped.)
  • In reported speech to refer to something that would have happened:
Hän sanoi, että olisi tehnyt sen. (He said that he would have done it.)

Formation:

The Konditionaali Perfekti is formed with:

  1. The conditional present form of the auxiliary verb olla ("to be"):
