The presente de subjuntivo is used to express doubt, uncertainty, wishes, emotions, or hypothetical situations. It is often triggered by specific verbs, conjunctions, or expressions that indicate subjectivity or non-factual information.

Mood:

The subjunctive mood is used to express desires, doubts, hypotheticals, emotions, or subjective judgments. In the present subjunctive tense, the focus is on actions that may or may not happen or are desired but not certain.

  • Subjunctive mood = doubt, wishes, hypothetical or subjective situations
  • Present subjunctive tense = uncertain or hypothetical actions in the present or future

Usage:

  • To express desires or wishes: Espero que vengas. (I hope you come.)
  • To express doubt or uncertainty: Dudo que él tenga razón. (I doubt that he is right.)
  • To express emotion or feelings: Me alegro de que estés aquí. (I’m glad you’re here.)
  • To talk about hypothetical or non-factual situations: Si llueve, no salgas. (If it rains, don’t go out.)
  • After certain conjunctions that trigger the subjunctive: Es posible que vayas al concierto. (It’s possible that you go to the concert.)

The present subjunctive is often triggered by specific verbs, phrases, or conjunctions, such as:

Irregular Verbs:

Stem-Changing Verbs:

In the present subjunctive, some verbs that are stem-changing in the indicative keep their changes, except for the nosotros and vosotros forms:

  • Querer (to want): quiera, quieras, quiera, queramos, queráis, quieran

  • Pronto (soon) (when expressing uncertainty)
  • Cuando (when) (in hypothetical contexts)
  • Antes de que (before) (with a subjunctive trigger)
