Futuro de Indicativo (Future Indicative Tense)

The futuro de indicativo is used to describe actions that will happen in the future. It can also be used to express speculation or probability about current events.

Mood:

The indicative mood is used to express actions that are factual and certain. The future tense in the indicative mood expresses events that are expected to happen or, in some cases, expresses certainty or probability about the present.

  • Indicative mood = certainty, facts, reality
  • Future tense = actions that will occur or speculative statements about the present

Usage:

  • To describe actions that will happen: Mañana iré al cine. (Tomorrow, I will go to the movies.)
  • To express certainty about future events: Te llamaré más tarde. (I will call you later.)
  • To express probability or conjecture about the present: ¿Qué hora será? (I wonder what time it is.)
  • To make promises or commitments: Lo haré mañana. (I will do it tomorrow.)

Irregular Verbs:

Many verbs in the future indicative have irregular stems but still follow the same endings as regular verbs. Common irregular verbs include:

  • Tener (to have): tendré, tendrás, tendrá, tendremos, tendréis, tendrán
  • Hacer (to do/make): haré, harás, hará, haremos, haréis, harán
  • Poder (to be able to): podré, podrás, podrá, podremos, podréis, podrán
  • Decir (to say/tell): diré, dirás, dirá, diremos, diréis, dirán
  • Salir (to leave): saldré, saldrás, saldrá, saldremos, saldréis, saldrán

Common Time Expressions:

  • Mañana (tomorrow)
  • La próxima semana (next week)
  • El próximo año (next year)
  • Dentro de (within [a certain time frame])
  • En el futuro (in the future)

Examples:

  • El año que viene viajaremos a México. (Next year we will travel to Mexico.)
  • Saldrás temprano para evitar el tráfico. (You will leave early to avoid traffic.)
  • No sé qué hora es. Serán las seis. (I don’t know what time it is. It’s probably six o’clock.)
