Futuro de Subjuntivo (Future Subjunctive Tense)

The futuro de subjuntivo is a rarely used tense in modern Spanish, mostly found in legal or literary contexts. It is used to express hypothetical or uncertain actions that may happen in the future. In everyday conversation, it has largely been replaced by the present subjunctive or other tenses.

Mood:

The subjunctive mood is used for expressing doubt, uncertainty, or hypothetical situations. The future subjunctive tense specifically refers to uncertain or hypothetical actions that could take place in the future, though it is almost obsolete in contemporary spoken Spanish.

  • Subjunctive mood = doubt, wishes, hypothetical or subjective situations
  • Future subjunctive tense = hypothetical future actions (rarely used)

Usage:

  • The future subjunctive is mostly found in legal documents, literature, and certain idiomatic expressions. For example:
    • Donde fueres, haz lo que vieres. (Wherever you go, do as you see.)
  • It is used in conditional sentences to express actions that might happen in the future under certain conditions:
    • Si alguien hablare contra ti, defiéndete. (If someone speaks against you, defend yourself.)
  • In modern Spanish, the present subjunctive is typically used instead of the future subjunctive.

Triggering Phrases:

Similar to other forms of the subjunctive, the future subjunctive is triggered by conditional phrases or hypothetical situations. However, these are more common in literary or legal contexts:

  • Si (if)
  • Cuando (when) (in hypothetical contexts)
  • Como (as long as)

Regular Conjugation (Subjunctive):

Él/Ella/Usted hablare comiere viviere
Nosotros habláremos comiéremos viviéremos
Vosotros hablareis comiereis viviereis

Irregular Verbs:

Irregular verbs in the future subjunctive follow the same irregular stems as in the preterite and imperfect subjunctive:

  • Ser/Ir (to be/go): fuere, fueres, fuere, fuéremos, fuereis, fueren
  • Hacer (to do/make): hiciere, hicieres, hiciere, hiciéremos, hiciereis, hicieren
  • Tener (to have): tuviere, tuvieres, tuviere, tuviéremos, tuviereis, tuvieren

Common Time Expressions:

  • Si (if) (in legal or formal writing)
  • Como (as long as) (in conditional contexts)
